Sometimes when you hear of a new innovation you wonder if it’s really worth all of the hype. When the announcement came out that Motorola engineer Martin Cooper made the first successful cell phone call on April 3, 1973,1 there were probably a lot of people thinking that it was a frivolous product which would never replace their landline phones. By 2017, of the 455 million telephone numbers in the U.S. about three-quarters were mobile phone numbers.2
The keypad, or keyless lock, may be another of those innovations that at first may seem to be for techies only, but a closer look reveals there are a number of solid benefits to switching from a keyed lock to a keyless entry system.
Make sure to seek the advice of a trusted locksmith before making a decision since they have the experience and knowledge.
Benefit #1: You don’t need a key
Physical keys can be lost or stolen. They can also break when inserted into a lock. With a keyless entry system you don’t have to spend time searching for your keys before you leave home. Anyone who has ever given a key to their child knows that the chances of it being misplaced are high. With a keyless entry system your child simply punches in a code on a keypad to enter your home. This increases your child’s safety as he or she can never be locked out of your home.
You also don’t have to go through the hassle and expense of having your locks changed when a key is lost. Don’t use overly simplistic codes, such as your house number. To help your child remember the code, use numbers that correspond to a shape, symbol or letter. A triangle for instance would translate to the numbers 1831 or a square would be 1793.3
Benefit #2: You can choose who can easily access your home or business.
The keypad code can be given to anyone you choose, including the dog walker and a friend who is feeding your goldfish and watering the plants while you are away. You can change the code as often as you want. So, if you switch to a new dog walker, the former dog walker can’t access your home. This feature is especially convenient for property owners who rent homes or apartments. Instead of having to change the locks when a new tenant moves into the residence, they just have to change the keypad code.
Benefit #3: You can see a record of who has entered your home or business.
With some systems you can also assign codes to different people and there is a computerized log kept of all access to the home or business. If items go missing, you can check the log to see who had access on a particular day.
Benefit #5: You can prevent unauthorized access during certain times.
If you don’t want your son or daughter sneaking in your home after midnight, with some keyless entry systems you can program the system not to allow access during certain times. If you own a business this is also a helpful feature to ensure that employees are not entering the business during hours when the business is closed. Some systems also have the ability to pre-set a time for the locks on doors to engage, so you don’t have to get out of bed to check and see if your doors are locked.4
Benefit #6: Keyless entry systems are durable and provide better security than traditional locks.
Regular keyed locks can get worn out and malfunction because of the constant friction of turning the keys in the locks. Because keypad locks aren’t mechanical locking systems, which use a key and tumbler system to lock or unlock a door, they can’t be picked or bumped like traditional locks.5 Hackers can be an issue with keypad locks, but good passwords, changed frequently, can go a long way to reducing this threat.
Some systems can even alert you or engage a lock-out feature if there are too many attempts to enter the wrong password. If your lock is integrated as part of a smart home system you can use your smartphone to open and lock your doors from anywhere.
The price of a keyless locking system for a residential or commercial property has gone down quite a bit in the past few years as more keyless locks are being sold. There is a wide array of keyless door locks available on the market. Features of these locks can differ greatly, as can the quality of the locking system. Because the safety of your family and your home is so important, it is best to seek out the advice of a professional locksmith to guide you in choosing the best lock for your home.
