Changing hardware on kitchen and bath cabinets has been touted as one of the easiest and most economical ways to update the look of your kitchen or bath. The same can be said for your exterior door hardware. Changing the door hardware can totally update the look of your entrance and improve the curb appeal of your home.

A professional locksmith company can help with your door hardware ensuring it is done right and looks right.

The National Association of Realtors has ranked improving curb appeal as one of the top five most valuable upgrades homeowners can make. Today, not only can you update the look of your home, but you can also get a doorknob or lever that repels germs!

Kwikset teamed with Microban to introduce the first antimicrobial / antibacterial door hardware at the International Builder Show in 2016. Many other manufacturers have also introduced their versions of antimicrobial door hardware in the past few years, including Master Lock’s keyed entry doorknobs with an antimicrobial finish called SilvaBond.

How do doorknobs repel germs?

Schlage has antimicrobial locks for commercial use which are coated with an IFS silver antimicrobial additive, but they currently don’t offer this finish in their residential line. With the nation in the midst of a pandemic we are all more aware of how certain surfaces, especially high-touch surfaces, such an entry and exit door locks and handles, can harbor harmful germs as they tend to be cleaned less frequently than other surfaces.1

On an unprotected door lock or handle research has revealed that bacteria can double every 20 minutes.2 If microbes are not able to grow on a surface, they die quicker and don’t create a breeding ground for other microbes. Antimicrobial technology is actually incorporated into the finish of the door lock and handle.

In the case of Kwikset, the Microban technology was incorporated into the powder coat materials. Before being released for sale to the public, testing was conducted to make sure that the antimicrobial protection would last for the life of the product and that over time the product finish would retain its original look.

Proper installation

Even if a homeowner chooses to install antimicrobial / antibacterial door hardware the homeowner and their family and guests should still observe all Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) precautions to eliminate and/or reduce COVID-19 exposure.3 Door hardware with antimicrobial protection is said to be 99.9 percent cleaner than standard door hardware,4 however, following CDC guidelines ensures that you are providing the best protection possible for your family during this pandemic.
