We’ve all been dragged through career fairs or spoken to by parents with fascinating jobs on career days at school. But there’s a lot of jobs out there that don’t get recognition or often talked about to give you information on how to get involved. One such job are locksmiths. The process of unlocking something or creating new keys may not sound invigorating, but it’s an intense field that takes training and a dedication to detail.
What do you have to do to become a locksmith?
To become a licensed locksmith, you’ll need to undergo a period of apprenticeship, pass a certification exam, and, if you want to start your own business, get yourself a business license. The steps all have their own requirements and each state is different where requirements are concerned.
If you’re considering becoming a locksmith and want a little more information on it before you dive in, we’ve got a guide below to common topics and questions.
Finding Locksmith Training
Start by looking up or searching online for local locksmith training facilities and programs. Most major cities and their surrounding suburbs will have several options. One huge benefit of the modern information age is you can now do much of the course and training remotely, online. For many people with hectic schedules, this is the best option.
What is ALOA?
You will need to register with ALOA, Associated Locksmiths of America. It is through ALOA that you will take your certification test, if required by your state, and receive your official designation: Registered Locksmith, Certified Automotive Locksmith, or Certified Master Safe Tech.
Does My State Require Certification?
Not every state requires that you take an exam and receive a certification to call yourself a locksmith, though doing so, even in non-required states, will increase your salary options. You must be certified if you live in these states: Alabama, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia.
Is There an Age Requirement?
While you may know early that you want to be a locksmith, there are still official regulations as to who can work as a locksmith. While, as a teenager, you can technically work for a locksmith company as long as you meet the minimum age requirements in your state, to start your training you must be at least 18 years old.
A locksmith is a rewarding and, for many, fun career. Getting to where you want to be will take time but with dedication and study and a lot of motivation, you could even own your own locksmith business one day.
